Syracuse Downtown Cultural District

In 2000, F.O.C.U.S. convened over 40 individuals from diverse segments of the community to implement the citizens’ goals to make downtown livable and our cultural heart. A working group was formed in partnership with the Downtown Committee of Syracuse, the City, County and citizens including the Cultural Resources Council and major cultural institutions. On September 8, 2003, F.O.C.U.S. initiated a request to the Syracuse Mayor and Common Council to pass a resolution designating the “Special Assessment District Downtown” (Business Improvement District) as the “Downtown Cultural District.” City of Syracuse ordinance #453 was adopted. In addition, the ordinance provided the provision of office space and staff to support the implementation and continuation of the district.
