FOCUS names Sean Kirst as 2018 Wisdom Keeper
The Board of Directors of FOCUS Greater Syracuse Inc. is pleased to announce that Ernie Pyle Award Winning columnist and author Sean Kirst has been chosen as the Wisdom Keeper for 2018.
Sean’s book “The Soul of Central New York,” which is a compilation of his evocative stories about the experiences of people in our community, was nominated for the non-fiction Central New York Book of the Year. His deep love for Upstate New York, our community and the city of Syracuse, where he and his wife, Nora, have raised their three children, can be felt in every well-chosen word. As a writer Sean confronts the good, the bad and the beautiful ironies of circumstance that have challenged cities across our state with an underlying hope that strength of human character can win out over economic frailty. As a parent he has dealt with the joys and troubles of raising three young people to be responsible and caring contributors to our world. As a neighbor he has stepped in – as so many do – day-to-day to support young students and baseball players, to lead roadside clean-up efforts when others would not, to contribute and celebrate the contributions of others who are everyday heroes.
As a Wisdom Keeper he joins a long list of people who have shown leadership, continual caring and an understanding of the importance of the vision for tomorrow: Bea Gonzalez; Vice President for Community Engagement at Syracuse University; Dr. Sharon Brangman; Director of the Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease at SUNY Upstate Medical University; Rev. Jim Mathews; Neil Murphy, former President of SUNY ESF; Oren Lyons, Onondaga Nation Faithkeeper; Nancy Cantor, former Syracuse University Chancellor; William Sanford, former Assemblyman and Onondaga County Legislature Chairman; and FOCUS Founders Judy Mower and Chuckie Holstein.
While Sean is not an executive or political leader he has managed to demonstrate the principles of FOCUS – Forging Our Community’s United Strength – tapping citizen creativity to bring about change in Central New York by enabling citizens, organizations and government to work together to enhance the quality of our lives.
SAVE THE DATE: Tapping that creativity, Sean has asked that the Wisdom Keeper event for 2018 be a celebration with some of the people whose trust and whose stories have made his work possible. So the next Wisdom Keeper event, to be held the evening of April 4, 2018, will be a celebration of our community and not just of Sean. Please put it on your calendar and plan to join FOCUS for Wisdom Keeper 2018 at the Marriott Downtown Hotel Syracuse.
