A Presentation by the Onondaga Environmental Institute
At the Monthly Core Group meeting held on Friday, March 18, 2011, Sarah Wraight and Lindsay Spear of the Onondaga Environmental Institute gave a presentation on Onondaga Lake and the surrounding watershed. They began by describing the forests, surrounding creeks and rivers, and the rich and abundant plant, fish and animal life that inhabited the area before industrialization. They shared history of the native Haudenosaunee people, why Onondaga Lake is sacred and their visions for its future. Each presenter took a turn in talking about how the area has changed during the industrialization of the area, and the subsequent pollution by local industry that all but eliminated the plant, fish and wildlife native to the area. Most importantly, they described the current efforts to mediate the pollution and restore the lake and the surrounding watershed to its original natural state, encouraging participants to become a voice to assist in this restoration.
